Moving your home or office doesn’t need to be stressful. It just requires some forward planning. The main thing is to plan ahead and to allow adequate time.
Most problems arise because the packing is left too late, but you also need to look at getting quotes and booking a truck well ahead of time.
Obtain quotes for moving (and storage if required) at least 3 to 4 weeks before your move. Make sure, when comparing services from different suppliers, that you are comparing apples with apples.
Make sure that you (or your removal company) have transit and/or storage insurance and that it is adequate to cover the cost of your possessions. Make sure that the relevant insurance is included in the quote.
Setting the date
Many house sales are part of a chain of events that may make your moving in or out date somewhat up in the air. Try and get the final removal date subject to contract at least a week before your move. Inform your removal/truck rental/ storage companies immediately this contract date is set in place.
Packaging and protection
Start packing non-essential things two weeks before your anticipated removal day. You may be surprised by how many boxes are required. For example, the average kitchen can require between 20 and 30 medium size boxes.
Be sure to inform electricity, gas, phone and water supply companies of the date of your move and change of address. This way you will not be billed for services after you have moved out.
